Pool Tile Colours: How Your Tile Choice Changes the Colour of Your Pool Water

When you're choosing tiles for a swimming pool, you're not just choosing the colour of the tile. You're choosing the colour of the water too.

The same crystal-clear water can appear bright turquoise, deep ocean blue, soft aqua or even a beautiful natural green depending on the tiles beneath it. Light, depth, surrounding landscaping and the sky all play a part, but your pool tile colour is one of the biggest factors in creating the overall look.

So, what colour will your pool water actually be? Here's a guide to choosing pool tiles based on the look you want to achieve.

White & Light Pool Tiles: Fresh, Bright Aqua

If you love that fresh, resort-style pool look, white and very pale tiles are a beautiful choice.

White, ivory, pale grey and light stone-look tiles tend to create light, clear aqua or turquoise water. Because the tile surface reflects plenty of light, the overall pool feels bright, clean and inviting.

This works particularly well for contemporary homes, coastal-inspired outdoor spaces and smaller pools where you want to create a light and open feel.

The look: Pale aqua, fresh turquoise, bright and clean.

Light Blue Pool Tiles: Classic Swimming Pool Blue

There's a reason blue remains one of the most popular colours for swimming pools.

Light blue tiles enhance the natural blue appearance of the water without making it feel too dark or intense. Depending on the exact shade, they can create anything from a soft sky blue to a vibrant turquoise.

This is a great option if you want that unmistakable "jump straight in" swimming pool blue.

The look: Clear blue, turquoise, fresh and summery.

Deep Blue Pool Tiles: Rich Ocean Blue

Want your pool to feel a little moodier and more luxurious? Go darker.

Navy, cobalt and deeper blue pool tiles create a much richer water colour. As the pool gets deeper, the colour becomes increasingly intense, giving you that beautiful deep-ocean effect.

Dark blue tiles can look particularly striking in larger pools and contemporary landscapes, especially when paired with pale paving or natural stone around the pool.

The look: Deep blue, ocean-inspired, dramatic and luxurious.

Green Pool Tiles: Tropical Lagoon

Green tiles can create some of the most beautiful and unexpected pool colours.

Soft sage, emerald, olive and blue-green tiles can shift the water towards turquoise, teal or lagoon green. Pair them with lush planting, natural stone and timber and you've instantly created a tropical escape in your own backyard.

Green doesn't necessarily mean you'll end up with green-looking water either. Blue from the sky and surrounding light mixes visually with the tile colour, often creating incredibly rich aqua and teal tones.

The look: Teal, turquoise, lagoon green, lush and tropical.

Beige & Sand Pool Tiles: Mediterranean Aqua

One of our favourite ways to achieve a natural-looking pool is with warm neutral tiles.

Beige, sand, cream and warm stone-look tiles can produce surprisingly beautiful soft aqua and turquoise water. Rather than looking traditionally "blue", the pool has a warmer, more natural quality.

Think Mediterranean villas, limestone surrounds and relaxed European summers.

These colours also work beautifully when you want the pool to blend into the wider landscape rather than become an intense block of blue.

The look: Soft aqua, Mediterranean turquoise, warm and natural.

Grey Pool Tiles: Sophisticated Blue-Grey

Grey pool tiles are perfect for a more architectural or contemporary aesthetic.

Light greys can produce a soft blue or blue-grey water colour, while charcoal and darker greys create deeper, moodier tones.

Grey is also incredibly versatile around modern architecture because it pairs beautifully with concrete, natural stone, black accents and contemporary landscaping.

The look: Blue-grey, smoky blue, sophisticated and modern.

Black & Charcoal Pool Tiles: Deep Reflective Water

For serious impact, dark pool tiles create an entirely different experience.

Black and charcoal tiles absorb more light, making the water appear much deeper and darker. In certain lighting, the surface can become highly reflective, almost like a mirror.

This effect works beautifully for architectural pools, infinity pools and landscapes where the pool is designed to feel like a natural body of water.

Just remember that darker doesn't always mean "black water". Sunlight, depth and reflections can still bring out beautiful deep blue, navy and green tones.

The look: Deep blue, ink, navy, reflective and dramatic.

Mosaic Tiles: More Colour, Texture & Movement

Mosaics are another way to completely transform the appearance of pool water.

Instead of one solid colour beneath the surface, mosaics combine multiple tones. As sunlight moves across the water, those different colours and finishes create variation, shimmer and depth.

A blend of pale blues, greens and whites can create vibrant turquoise water, while darker blue mosaics can produce a much deeper ocean effect.

The smaller tile format also means more grout lines, which adds another layer of texture beneath the water.

Why Does Pool Water Look Different From the Tile?

This is where it gets interesting.

Water itself absorbs and scatters light, while also reflecting the sky and surrounding environment. The deeper the water becomes, the more pronounced the effect can be.

That's why a beige tile can create blue water, a pale green tile can become turquoise and a dark grey tile can produce a rich blue.

Your finished pool colour can also change throughout the day. Bright midday sun may make the water appear vibrant and clear, while overcast weather or late afternoon light can create softer, deeper tones.

Don't Forget Your Pool Surroundings

The tile inside your pool isn't working alone.

Your pool coping, outdoor tiles, landscaping, fencing and surrounding architecture all influence the finished look. A turquoise pool surrounded by tropical greenery will feel very different from the same pool beside pale stone paving and a crisp white home.

For a cohesive result, think about your pool interior tiles and outdoor tiles together rather than choosing them separately.

Choosing Your Perfect Pool Colour

Before selecting your pool tiles, start with one simple question:

What colour do you want the water to be?

From bright resort-style turquoise to deep ocean blue or a natural Mediterranean aqua, your answer can help narrow down the perfect tile.

And remember, don't judge a pool tile purely by how it looks dry on a sample board. Water, sunlight and depth can completely transform its appearance.
