We met with the proud owner of this home, Caroline Doyle, to discuss the design process.

Hi Caroline, could you please tell us a little bit about yourself?

“I’m a Mum of two young sets of twins and run a family portrait photography business. My husband, Cam, also runs his own tiling business. We live in Papamoa”.

How long have you lived in your home?

“We moved into our first home, which we built through GJ Gardner ( Cam does all the GJ Gardner tiling in the Tauranga area) at the start of 2022”.

The lounge area is decked with our Endless Nero 60x120, which is perfect for creating an indoor-to-outdoor flow.

How long had you planned your build? Did you enjoy the process?

“It was around 12 months before we moved in when we decided on all the designs. I actually really like that we made the decisions around the design all at one point. I feel like had we sorted the build-out ourselves, then we would have changed our minds or been really wishy-washy with our decisions throughout the build.

So it was good to get it done at the start and signed off. We were gratefully able to do ‘owners care’ for the bathrooms and tiles in the living area so that we could choose exactly what we wanted for those rooms”.

What styles were you drawn to when planning your build?

The simplicity of the Medley White Minimal 60 makes the denim blue and black marble style speckles of the Medley White Classic stand out dramatically.

“I love colour, so I knew I wanted colour in the bedrooms. Looking at the different room examples on the paint company’s social media and websites really helped me to choose the style of each room.

We also wanted it to be open plan and practical, making life as easy as possible for us with 4 kids. We then decided that the main living area was to all be tiled and the main bathroom was to have a wet area, where the bath and shower were together behind glass.

This allowed the kids to splash as much as they wanted without having to wipe up the mess each time. We ended up with approximately 150 square meters of tiling”.

What made you choose the terrazzo in your bathroom?

.

“I said to Cam that this needs to be his ‘pièce de résistance’ he’s a tiler, so his own bathrooms needed to have that wow factor. Terrazzo is very on-trend, it’s so easy, just go to plan and safe, but I wanted our bathrooms to be beautiful. We still love them so much!

I shopped around but kept coming back to the Medley range, I just couldn’t get that same look anywhere else. We loved the fact it has different types of terrazzo in the same colour ranges, so we were able to have matching colours with our floor and walls but in different stone speck sizes. We then did a different colour for each bathroom, so both bathrooms were similar but different”.

You have such great style! Where do you get inspiration from?

“Being a creative myself, I’m constantly making and creating, so always looking at different styles and trends that are happening. Style inspiration is everywhere through - the internet, magazines, social media, and  Pinterest. I guess things just jump out at you, or you might have liked something for a long time”.

“We used six different tiles from Tile Space, so I couldn’t pick just three”.
