The floor is your canvas! Whether you want to go big and bold or subtle and classic, there are tile designs to suit any style. At Tile Space, we are all about blending practicality together with beautiful design which is reflected in this list of seven classic floor tiles designs. From sleek minimalist to country kitchen, there are floor tile ideas for every project.

And that's not all, we've also brought in one of our  tile consultants, Moet Walker, our In-House Designer, to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about floor tiles and how to style them in your home. Let's start off with what she had to say.

.

Floor Tile Design 101: 4 Important FAQs Answered By Moet Walker, Tile Space Consultant:

What tile pattern is best for floor tiles?

"This really depends on the space you're working with. The most common floor tile pattern we see in New Zealand is the stacked tile pattern [a.k.a grid pattern]", so if you want a more modern look, this pattern is for you.

What is a stacked tile pattern? As you can see in this beautiful bathroom design that uses our  Navona Honey Vein tile, a stacked tile pattern is where rectangle or square tiles are laid in a straight line to create a grid-like look.

Which tile Colour is best for flooring?

"Mid-tone floor tiles are more forgiving in regards to dirt" says Moet. So, if you want a floor tile that's easy to maintain, go for  grey concrete-look tiles, earthy stone-look tiles, or wood look tiles in warm tones.

.

What if I have a small space where dark tiles aren't ideal?

" Light tiles are best for small or dark spaces" says Moet. Tiles like whites, soft greys and creams create a lighter space and make the space feel bigger than it is.

Go for  luxurious marble-look tiles like the Navona Bone Cross Matt 60, or stone-look tiles in soft shades like cream and beige like the Travertino Navona Bianco Matt.

.

What floor tile pattern makes a room look bigger?

Have a small space? Then a stacked floor tile pattern is best for you.

Moet says that "a stacked tile makes the space look bigger because you aren’t adding an extra element in the pattern like a staggered brick pattern for example".

.

Do square or rectangle tiles make a room look bigger?

According to our tile expert "this depends on the size of the tiles and the shape of the room. Laying large rectangle tiles in a long rectangle-shaped room creates 'a bigger feel"

"Laying rectangle tiles horizontally can make a narrow room feel wider" says Moet while "laying tiles the opposite way can make the space feel longer".

If you want to dig deeper into this, we highly recommend reading this guide to  Large vs Small Tiles, so you can understand the pros and cons of each to decide what works best for your space.
