8 Contemporary Floor Tile Designs For Your Living Room

Floor tiles are for more than just bathrooms! Cost-effective, easy to clean and maintain, practical and long-lasting, ceramic tiles are a great flooring option for your living spaces. To inspire in your home reno or new build project, we’ve put together eight beautiful floor tiles and designs for a living room. Plus, our in-house interior designer, Moet Walker, has answered some common questions about choosing the right tile for your home.

.

1. Concrete-Look Tiles

We have to say, this is our favourite look. What’s not to love about sleek, contemporary and practical concrete-look tile? Concrete tiles come in many shades and finishes to match your home and are particularly good at enhancing indoor-outdoor flow. If you have a patio area connected to your living area, choosing the same tile indoors and out will give you that breezy holiday vibe all year round.

Grey is the key colour for concrete-look tiles—but that doesn’t have to mean boring. Add character with a rectangular shape, rustic edges, and tonal changes within the tile. Our Form Cement Tile is a lovely example of adding interest to a concrete look.

.

2. Wood-Look Tiles

Wood-look tiles are a blend of beauty and function, with the warmth of a wooden finish and the practicality of a floor tile.

Enjoy the gorgeous look of woodgrain without the worry of stains and upkeep that comes with real wood flooring. Porcelain tiles are hard-wearing and stain resistant, and now so sophisticated it’s hard to distinguish between a tile and a real wood plank.

Lay in long planks like this rustic Hamptons-style look or bring your parquet flooring dreams to life.

.

3. Terrazzo Tiles

Terrazzo tiles are a distinctly Italian look, descending from Venice where tile makers would mix leftover marble chips and concrete to create a distinct look.

Today, Terrazzo’s multifaceted look gives you many options to match your existing home décor. Light and dark, colours or neutral, large or small chips. Each of these brings a different personality to the final look.

Grey and white tones give subtle interest while allowing the rest of your home’s features to shine. A bold colour choice (think pink tiles!) can be the feature of the room and ties into the rest of your furnishings. While tone-on-tone, like our Affogato mid-grey range, shows off Terrazzo’s subtler side.

.

4. Marble-Look Tiles

Marble is a classic floor choice that’s never been out of style. You can choose a tile with subtle veins like this Naos Blanco Polish 60x120 or a striking contrast to up the luxury factor with our Invisible Light Polish 60x120 tile. Again, tiles are a much more practical, easy-care version of the real thing. Enjoy all the pizazz of marble without the hassle of resealing.

.

5. Stone-Look Tiles

Stone tiles have a subtler grain and variation in colour throughout the whole tile that lends itself to a look that blends well with other aspects of the room rather than being the showstopper.

Versatile in its options, you can find stone tiles in a wide range of neutrals, from white to charcoal—pro tip: a mid-grey tile like our Tempo Ash Matt 60x120 is great for hiding dust and dirt.

.

6. Black Tiles

Until now we’ve looked at types of finishes in a variety of colours. Black stands as a trend in its own right. It is a striking, modern option available across marble, stone, porcelain, and decorative looks.

Increasingly, we are seeing bolder choices of colour and black is the epitome of bold style. Black marble shouts luxury, and the white and rust-toned veins in our Marvel Atlantis Polish 75x150 tile can be easily matched with soft furnishings. Black and charcoal Terrazzo takes black and adds texture and interest. Similarly, this matt black limestone-look can easily be placed across a large floor without dulling the room, as the stone flecks provide interest and versatility.

.

7. XL and Large Format Tiles

An ever-popular option, large format tiles create a seamless sense of space. Large and XL formats are especially suited to living areas, both indoor and outdoor, and can create a calm and clean look due to their unbroken nature.

We are currently loving this Klif Silver Matt Stone-look tile, the neutral grey has a warm and inviting appearance, with plenty of movement and variation.

.

8. Decorative Tiles

While not for everyone, decorative tiles are a stunning, unique addition and a focal point of any home.

Modern decorative tiles are all about contemporary silhouettesgeometric shapes, and modern twists on classic Moroccan patterns. We recommend keeping your furnishings plain and simple to let these interesting tiles do the talking.

Living Room Tiles: Your Questions, Answered By Kiwi Interior Designer

Insights on living room floor tiles from Moet Walker, our Tile Space interior designer and tile expert.

.

What is the best tile for a living room floor?

We recommend matt porcelain tile for living rooms as they are high-traffic zones. Porcelain is long-lasting, hard-wearing and requires little upkeep.

Matt, rather than polished, gives the surface some added grip and avoids slips in a high-traffic area. Matt finishes also reduces the glare created by natural light sources.

.

Which colour floor tiles are best for the living room?

Colour is a very personal choice, and there are no wrong answers. Consider the colours and style of the rest of your home and choose something you love. If this isn’t your forever home, you may want to consider something neutral to appeal to a wide range of tastes.

For your living area, consider warm tones to create a homely feel in even the most contemporary of spaces. A brown or yellow undertone in a grey is more inviting than a cool blue undertone. Some current favourites of ours are these Slate Grey, and Slate Desert tiles.

.

Are tiles too cold in the living room?

Again, this is a personal choice. Some people think tiles are cold and others don’t mind. If you’re concerned about tile in your living space, consider underfloor heating. You can also add rugs to spaces where you want to create a cosy section.

This is especially good in open-plan housing where hard floors like tile are useful in the kitchen and dining area, and rugs can be added to seated areas to add warmth and softness underfoot.

.

How to choose tiles for a small living room?

As we always say, bigger tiles in smaller spaces are the best! With fewer grout lines, large tiles create a seamless look, visually expanding the space.

We often recommend a mid-sized 60x120 in smaller living areas such as this gorgeous earthy tile and this modern take on a stone look
